What is Medjool Dates?

Medjool Date in box

There are over 1,500 different date varieties grown in the world — they grow in warm climates like California, Arizona, Florida and the Middle East like Iran. Medjool dates are one of the most popular, known for their large size, soft texture and rich flavor.

Medjool dates are a FRESH FRUIT. Most people think of dates as a dried fruit because they’re thinking of the dates you buy in the baking aisle. Medjool dates are actually harvested from the date palm, cleaned, sorted and packaged right away. There’s no processing and they’re never physically or chemically dried. That’s why you’ll find them in the produce section at the grocery store.

Medjool vs. Deglet Noor

Medjool dates are darker, larger, and have a sweeter caramel flavor than the other varieties, making it the most popular date variety. It’s no surprise they are referred to as “Bakers Choice” as they make a wonderful natural sweetener and sugar alternative.  The stickiness of Medjool dates makes them great for binding other ingredients together while adding sweetness.

Deglet Noor dates are less sweet and have a nuttier, buttery flavor. Their dryer texture makes them ideal for chopping and adding to quickbreads or adding to salads.

History & Trade

Date fruit palms are thought to possibly be the world’s first plant used by humans for food. Persian Gulf region is said to be the origin with the palms being cultivated since 6000 BC. In the pre-Islamic age, the agricultural settlement of the southeastern Arabia was predicated upon the domestication of the date fruit palm in 2500 BC. Dates are also cultivated in North Africa west to Morocco while being cultivated in just southern California and Arizona in the US.

Agriculture

Propagation in date palm cultivation by off-shoots from the base of the palm tree of the parent. Farmers do not like the propagation of seed as it results in low fruit quality and more than half of these fruits may be male-free.

Four to five years after planting, the suckers should be removed from the mother palm trees. During its 4th and 10th year of life, 9 to 20 off-shoots of 9 to 15 kg can be obtained in this process. This is a very slow multiplication operation, so in date palm farming this method is a bottleneck to be overcome. Although the technique of tissue culture is a standardized procedure, its commercial use remains limited.

Before removing the suckers, the outer leaves of mother palm should be cut back to 2/3rd of their lengths & the inner leaves should be cut to half, the pruned old leaves stalks should be tied together for protecting and developing the well-rooted system of the young growing bud.

Storage Tips

Storage of dates is a major concern after harvesting to prevent them from insect infestation. Traditionally, the date farmers try to store them in the locally available containers such as goatskins, clay jars, baskets made of palm leaflets or oil drums.
