While we all have a different concept of our “perfect” banana, take a moment to imagine yours. Is it just the right amount of yellow with tiny black spots all over it? Or does it tilt more towards a greenish-yellowish color with no spots at all?
The best time to eat bananas depends on your nutritional needs and preference. Generally, the taste and nutritional value of bananas change as they ripen.
what we don’t really know is that different stages of fruit maturity contain different health benefits. This is the reason there is a lot of confusion about what colour should a banana be when we eat it.

Green or Yellow : Which one is better?
The color of banana you choose impacts your health too because each color provides its own unique set of benefits.
1. Green Banana
- Full of Fiber
Green bananas or unripe banana are rich in fiber. Fibers play an essential role in ensuring digestive health as well as our heart health. Eating fiber-rich food increases satiety levels, and the high pectin content of the green bananas fills your stomach.
Good for diabetics
Raw bananas have low sugar content. If you’re searching for a snack that is low in sugar and will fill you up quickly, lean towards the green variety.
- Good Source of resistant starch
Green bananas are higher in starches. Resistant starch is a type of starch that isn’t fully broken down and absorbed by your body during the time of digestion. It is turned into short-chain fatty acids by intestinal bacteria. Resistant starch helps keep cholesterol in check.
- May Help Lower Blood Sugar
Green bananas, and fruits, in general, have a low glycemic index (around 30). Hence, eating them is helpful in managing blood sugar levels.
2. Yellow Bananas
At this stage, Ripe banana, there are no spots on the peels or on the fruit itself. These are very healthy for you and have a much sweeter flavor than green bananas.
They contain more antioxidants when compared to the green banana, as bananas have a higher level of antioxidants as they ripen.
Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of dietary antioxidants, and bananas are no exception.
They contain several types of potent antioxidants, including flavonoids and amines.
3. Yellow with Brown Spots Banana
The spotted yellow banana is a bit older but still contains lots of antioxidants. As bananas move beyond their ripe stage these spots will be shown.
These spots indicate the amount of starch that has been converted into sugar. This means the more the number of spots, the higher the sugar content in it.
- They are a quick fire source of Energy
Dark spotted bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber.
- Depressed mood
High levels of Tryptophan found in ripened bananas, boost serotonin levels, which improves mood.
- Beat PMS
Ripe bananas are rich in vitamin B6. There have been several studies showing the effectiveness of vitamin B6 helping to reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.
4. Brown or Mostly Brown Bananas
At this stage, Brown bananas have a much higher sugar content than at earlier stages, so they should be avoided by diabetics or those who need to watch blood sugar levels.
At this point, brown bananas are most often used as ingredients in baked goods, particularly in banana bread and muffins.
- Overripe bananas are easier to digest
Slightly overripe bananas, on the other hand, are probably a better option for anyone who has trouble digesting the food.
- It can help you combat cancer
When a banana becomes too ripe, its peel turns a few shades darker. The dark spots on the peel create Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), a substance that can kill cancerous and abnormal cells.
