Red delicious are medium-sized and have a conical shape. They are broadly round at the top and taper at the base.

It has thick, dark red skin with white lenticels visibly dotting the surface. The fine-grained flesh is creamy white, crisp and juicy and offers a mildly sweet taste with flavors of melon.

This apple originally called Hawkeye, then Strak Delicious. Renamed in 1914 to be marketed with the Golden Delicious variety.

Jonagold Apple

Jonagold is created in New York in 1940s as cross-breed of the Jonathan and Golden Delicious apple varieties. That’s why it was called Jonagold.

It is crimson red flushed with yellow-green undertones. It has large size and thin skin.

When you bite into their yellow or white flesh, you can expect a tangy, tart flavor mixed with a degree of sweetness.

Because of their large size they are now favoured by commercial growers in many parts of the world as well as Iran.

Apple Jonagold can be harvested from mid-October and is extremely versatile – eat the fruits fresh, cook, juice or dry them, or make your own cider.

Honeycrisp Apple

Honeycrisp apples are a medium to large varietal and have round to oblate shape with a generally uniform appearance. The apple’s skin is thin, easily bruised or damaged, and is semi-glossy with a dimpled surface.

It is a cross of the Macoun apple & Honeygold apple from the University of Minnesota. Honey alludes to how it comes from Honeygold apple and Crisp just refers to the texture. It is also marketed as Honeycrunch.

The skin is light green/yellow background largely covered with red-orange flush with strong hint of pink if grown in good sunlight. The skin may be flecked with occasional russet dots.

Honeycrisp apples are aromatic and contain balanced levels of sugar and acidity. The apples are known for their sweet and subtly tart, tangy flavor with subtle fruity nuances.

It is contain larger cell structures than other apples, which is how it gets its crispy bite.

The sweetest of the sweet, one of the top 15 most popular apple cultivars in the world. and unrivaled in Japan, is the Fuji apple.

As you might expect, Fuji comes from Japan. It is named after the town near the research station, Fujisaki.

Fuji apples have a light red skin with a yellow blush, often with red stripes. The flesh is dense, crisp, juicy and very sweet, with a creamy white color. Fujis are medium to large apples.

It originated as a cross between two American apple varieties—the Red Delicious and old Virginia Ralls Janet apples.

They are crunchy and low in acid, creating a mild and balanced, sweet-tart flavor with notes of honey and citrus.

Fuji is a late-ripening apple variety and need lots of sunshine to ripen properly.

Granny Smith Apple

Named in the honor of Maria Ann Smith, An actual grandma from Australia who cultivated the variant in the late 1860s.

Granny Smith apples are a gorgeous colour of green. They have a slightly harder texture and are just a little less sweet than other apples.

It is a late-harvest green apple variety. The skin is smooth and the green colour varies from milky to a clean, strong green, sometimes with slight white lenticel blotches. The skin can be quite tough to chew.

Braeburn Apple

Apple Braeburn produces huge crops of bi-coloured, smooth skinned, crisp and juicy fruits. This well known variety earns its popularity by being easy to grow, early to crop from a young age, and having excellent storage potential.

The heavy crops of flavoursome apples can be harvested in October and will store for up to 4 months.

Braeburn apples, botanically classified as part of the Rosaceae family, were first discovered growing in the Braeburn Orchard in New Zealand in 1952. They are a chance seedling, which means they were not bred intentionally but were created by nature.

The flesh of the Braeburn apple is crisp, juicy and pale yellow to gold and contains a few dark brown seeds in the center of the fibrous core, with a tart flavor that is balanced by a touch of sweetness.

Braeburn was the first modern apple variety in large-scale production where the flavour was genuinely on a par with the older classic apple varieties.

 

Pink Lady Apple

Pink Lady apple is a cross between Golden Delicious and Lady Williams

The characteristics of a Pink Lady are similar to both of its parent apples. Golden Delicious is a softer, juicy, very sweet, and golden-yellow apple favored for eating and baking. Lady Williams is very red, crisp, and have a sharp and tangy flavor. Pink Lady has the best of both worlds: sweet and tart, crisp and juicy, with blush pink skin. It’s a beautiful and versatile apple variety.

Named after a cocktail in 1951 book the Cruel Sea by Nicholas Montserat – the developer’s favorite, also known by their cultivar name, Cripps Pink.

The apple’s skin is glossy, smooth, thin, and chewy, with prominent lenticels scattered across the surface. The skin also showcases a yellow-green hue, covered in large patches of bright pink to red blush.

The flesh is fine-grained, firm, and aqueous with a dense and crisp consistency. The flesh is slow to oxidize, retaining its white hue for extended periods.

 

Golden Delicious Apple

Golden Delicious, is a classic dessert apple, and, because of its high yield and sweetness with comparatively little acidity, one of the world’s most popular.

In addition to a pronounced anise and cinnamon aroma, it has a ripe, slightly honey and pear-like aroma. The pulp of the Golden Delicious is very fine-structured and rather tender.

Golden Delicious arose from a chance seedling, possibly a hybrid of Grimes Golden and Golden Reinette. Originally named Mullin’s Yellow Seeding, but renamed by Stark Brothers Nurseries to market it with Red Delicious.

The skin has a golden-yellow to bright yellow hue, often tinged with green or covered in patches of pale pink-red blush. the white to ivory flesh is fine-grained, aqueous, and semi-firm, with a crisp but light, soft, and tender consistency.

In cooler climates, the flavor becomes slightly more robust, releasing a more acidic and sweeter taste. If the apples are grown in warmer climates, their flavor will be milder as the acid content is reduced.

McIntosh Apple

McIntosh Apples are known for their balanced tart flavor, fine tender texture, bright white flesh, and bright red & green bi-color peel. This variety was discovered in Canada in the early 1800s.

McIntosh apples have a tart, sour flavor with a hint of autumn spice. The tasting notes of the apple are almost citrusy but have a refreshing acidity that is enough to be effervescent when eaten fresh.

In general these apples keep reasonably well in store, but the flavor falls away quite rapidly.

The Gala is known by many names depending on where it is grown: Annaglo, Galaxy, Regala, Tenroy, Mondial Gala, Royal Gala, Rainier Gala.
