Top 5 Variety Philippines Banana

Except Cavendish banana, there are four main types of bananas grown widely in the Philippines: Lacatan, Latundan, Bungulan and the small Saba or Cardaba variety.

1. Cavendish Banana​

The Cavendish, is the big banana with a thick peel and small seeds that we all recognize in the grocery store. This variety also travels well and maintains a consistent texture, which makes it an appealing variety for consumers

They are slightly sweet and have a creamy texture. They have various stages of ripening, from green to yellow, to yellow with brown spots.

Cavendish is the most grown variety in the Philippines.

2. Lacatan bananas

Also Known as: Mapang (Misamis Occidental), Pisang Berangan (Malaysia), Pisang Barangan (Indonesia), Khuai Hom Maew (Thailand)

 
 

Lacatan, A cultivated variety of banana originating in the Philippines; also a more widely cultivated variety of banana which is a clone of the Cavendish banana; a plant or fruit of either of these varieties.

Lakatan bananas, also spelled Lacatan, Typically grow to a height of five to nine feet. The fruits can be harvested 8 to 12 months after planting.

Lakatan fruits are longer and thicker-skinned than the Latundan bananas and turn a characteristic yellow-orange when ripe.

carries a balanced taste that has just the right amounts of sweet, slightly tangy, and custardy. Texture-wise it is moist but that is moister and denser than Cavendish. Yet it’s less chewy than Saba and yields a creaminess when bitten.

3. Latundan banana

Also known as: Tundan (Cebu), Turdan (Tagalog), Cantong (Misamis Oriental), Pisang Rastali (Malaysia), Pisang Raja (Indonesia), Kluai Nam (Thailand), Chuoi Goong (Vietnam), Silk Fig (West Indies)

 

Latundan banana plants typically reach a height of 10 to 13 feet. They require full or partial sun exposure. The flowers are yellow, purple, or ivory in color.

Compared to Lakatan, It is round-tipped with thin yellow skin that splits once fully ripe. Also has a paler flesh and texture is less dense and relatively fluffier; which also becomes more slippery and ultra-creamery as you chew.

They have a slightly acidic, apple-like flavor.

4. Saba banana

Also known as: Dippig (Ilocos), Pisang Kepok (Indonesia), Pisang Nipah (Malaysia), Kluai Hin (Thailand)
Note: Saba refers to both a sub-group, as well as a distinct cultivar within that sub-group that goes by the same name.

 

Saba bananas grow in giant bunches at the top of a tall central stem on large banana palms. Once bunch of Saba bananas can weigh up to 80 pounds. Each ‘hand’ containing up to 20 angled fruits.

The fruits become ready for harvesting 150 to 180 days after flowering, longer than other banana varieties. Typically, a bunch has 16 hands, with each hand having 12 to 20 fingers.

They are shorter and thicker than a common banana, with a blockier shape and sharply angled sides.

Saba bananas are often harvested while still green though they will mature from green to a deeper yellow color. Saba banana is of the ‘cooking’ sort, with a firmer, generally less sweet character compared to other dessert bananas. But Saba can also be taken raw when very ripe. 

They have a thick peel, which helps protect them during any shipment. 

Saba banana offer a rich flavor profile, It has a sweet, tangy, aromatic flavor and developing a taste somewhat like a sweet potato when cooked. When ripe they are slightly sweet with hints of citrus and peach.

5. Bungulan bananas

Also known as: Buñguran (Bicol), Buluñgan (Cebu), Balañgon (Negros Occidental and Iloilo), Lacatan (Central America—not to be confused with what we consider Lakatan), Pisang Masak Hijau (Malaysia)

 

Bungulan starts green and stays green, even when ripe. In Malaysia, the name of this banana is “Pisang Masak Hijau” . This name means green (hijau) ripe (masak) banana (pisang) because its fruits remain green at maturity.

It produces bunches consisting of 6 to 12 hands, each with 12 to 20 fingers.

Bungulan banana is long, slightly curved and slightly angular. The flesh is sweet, melting, aromatic with a creamy color when ripe.
